In Jules Verne's novel, the castaways stranded on Mysterious Island regain hope when Cyrus Smith, the group's engineer, is found safe and sound: by identifying the island's resources, and building an oven and tools, the scientist soon makes the island a haven of plenty.
儒勒·凡尔纳的小说《神秘岛》中被困在岛上的落难者在发现他们的工程师赛勒斯·史密斯安然无恙后重获希望：这位工程师查找岛上资源，修砌炉灶并制造工具，很快就把孤岛变成一个富足的避风港。
Engineers, men and women, are constantly innovating to meet the challenges of our world.

To build more inclusive growth, to develop renewable energies and to face climate change, to guarantee a fairer and more sustainable world, we need more than ever this scientific creativity at the service of all.
为实现更具包容性的增长，发展可再生能源和应对气候变化，为确保世界更加公平和更可持续，我们比以往任何时候都更需要这种服务于所有人的科学创造力。
That is what this third World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development means, recognizing the magnitude of the contribution engineers make to our world and to the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
承认工程师对我们的世界以及实现《2030年议程》目标所作的巨大贡献，正是我们今年庆祝第三个促进可持续发展世界工程日的主旨所在。
However, and this is also the spirit of the Recommendation on Open Science, adopted by UNESCO's Member States in November 2021, in order to be effective, engineering must also be open, inclusive and collaborative.
要做到切实有效，工程学还必须讲求开放、包容与合作——这亦是去年 11月教科文组织会员国通过的《开放科学建议书》的精神所在。
This is why UNESCO is committed to reducing inequalities in engineering: in terms of gender, when only 30% of engineers are women; as well as of geography, especially in Africa, where the number of engineers is lower than in any other region of the world.
正是出于这个原因，教科文组织致力于消除工程学领域的不平等现象：性别层面上，只有30%的工程师是女性；地域层面上，尤其是在非洲，那里的工程师数量低于世界上任何其他地区。
We also seek to bring together engineers from all countries around common projects. This is the central idea of the hackathon we are holding today: for 24 hours, students from all backgrounds will work together to solve concrete problems in an atmosphere of intellectual emulation.
我们还力求通过共同的项目，让各国工程师走到一起。这便是我们今天组织“编程马拉松”的中心思想：在24小时里，各种背景的男女学生们将在才智比拼的氛围中共同解决具体问题。
This collective approach to engineering will be essential in the years to come: we need all our energy to rebuild more wisely and more sustainably and to meet the challenges of the world. This is the message for the future that UNESCO seeks to convey on World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development.
这种工程学的集体方法在未来的岁月中将至关重要：为了以更明智、更可持续的方式进行重建并应对世界的挑战，我们需要汇聚所有的力量。值此促进可持续发展世界工程日，教科文组织期望传递这一面向未来的讯息。
