Come out 这个片语有非常多的用法,比方说书或专辑的出版:"The book will come out next month(这本书下个月出版)." 或是东西跑出来,例如:"The rat won't come out(这只老鼠不愿出来)." 但是在同性恋的用法里有个特殊的解释,就是"出柜",也就是说一位同性恋者向大家宣布他是同性恋的身份.
为什么叫"出柜"而不是"出屋"或是出其它东西?我想这跟上一句的 closet friend 是有关的.Closet 就是指柜子而言,而从 come out of the closet,你说不叫"出柜"还能叫什么呢?
come out of the closet:to admit something openly that you kept secret before, especially because of shame or embarrassment 公开承认秘密(尤指因耻辱或尴尬而一直保守着的秘密)
Homosexuals in public life are now coming out of the closet. 公众人物中的同性恋者如今正逐步亮相.
