See how many plates we have, but don't count in the cracked ones.
We'd better count noses to see how many drinks we'll have to serve after the meeting.
To make sure no members of the tour get lost, the tourist guide count noses every time they get back on the bus.
另外take a head count也有“数脑袋”之意,不过两者的区别是take a head count的使用范围比较广,例如在数赞成和反对的票数时,一般不用count noses,而用take a head count,比如:
We took a head count to decide the issue.
Count one's chickens before they hatch.
Do you really think you can find a job as easily as that? If you ask me, you're counting your chickens before they hatch.
另外大家还比较熟悉的一个词就是countdown(倒计时)。
Count me in.
The old lady counted out thirty pence and gave it to the shop assistant.
