Linda: How's business at your bookstore, Paul?
琳达:保罗,你的书店生意怎么样?
Paul: So far so good. I'm hoping that with time I'll have a larger client base.
保罗:到目前为止还不错,我希望过段时间能有更大的客户群。
Linda: Well, I hope it works out for you. I hear that the first year is the hardest. A lot of businesses end up going under.
琳达:嗯,希望你能成功,我听说第一年是最艰难的。很多企业都以失败告终。
Paul: I've heard that statistic before but I'm still hopeful. Plus, I've leamed a few things about being self-employed.
保罗:我之前也听说过那样的数据,不过我还是满怀希望的,再加上我也学了一些自己做老板的知识。
Linda: Such as?
琳达:比如说?
Paul: Oh, just some of the basics. Like knowing that sometimes you need to spend money to make money, but also keeping in mind that every dollar invested in the business is another dollar that eventually has to be recouped from sales.
保罗:哦,只是一些基本的东西。比如知道有时候你需要通过花钱来挣钱,但是心里也要明白你所投入的每一块钱最终都需要通过销售才能赚回来。
Linda: That makes sense.
琳达:挺有道理的。
Paul: It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the purpose of a business is to make money. It's easy to make money in the short run, but the real purpose is to create value for both yourself and your customers. That's what keeps people coming back.
保罗:一般人都很容易掉入做生意的目的就是要赚钱这个误区。在短期内赚钱是很容易的,但做生意的真正目的是要为你自己和顾客创造价值,那样才能有回头客。
Linda: That's good thinking! You really sound like you know what you're doing.
琳达:这种想法很好!听上去你真的很清楚自己在做什么。
