在今天的课堂上，我们将要学习的是用含有nod这个名词，可以表示“to give permission for something”这个意思的一个Idiom。它是什么呢？请看下面的例句：

例句-1： She's a tough nut to crack; I don't think she'll give us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris.

例句-2： She implored her mother to give her the nod to go on the trip in Guilin.

在上面的2个例句中，都使用了同一个短语：give sb. the nod，nod在这里的词性是名词。在我们的生活工作中，如果对方同意你的观点或意见等，允许你去做某事的时候，经常会伴有点头这个动作，因此不难理解，give sb. the nod的意思即为：允许……；对……表示同意。

下面我们来细看Example One——She's a tough nut to crack; I don't think she'll give us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris. 这句话是说：她这个人不好说话，我想她不会同意我们去巴黎浪漫度假的。在这个句子中，我们要注意3个要点。

第一个要点是一个习语：a tough nut to crack。A touch nut to crack表示“棘手的事情，难以应付的问题或情况”或者是“难以对付的人，难说服或影响的人”。例如：It is a tough nut for him to crack.（这对他而言是一个难题。）He's a tough nut to crack.（他是个很难说服的人。）

第二要点是既可表示“度假”又可表示“拥有一份工作”的短语：have a vocation。例如：. It became urgent that I should have a vocation of some kind.（我要找个什么职业，这已经是迫不急待的事了。）I'm going to have my winter vocation in Shanghai, in which I have a few close friends.（我准备到上海度寒假，那儿有我的一些好朋友。）

第三要点是：用give sb. the nod表示赞同，同意某人去做某事要用动词不定式。句子中是“gave us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris”，to have a romantic vocation in Paris是动词不定式短语做目的状语。
