我们今天继续第19课的学习。在第十九课的学习中，我给大家留下了个悬念。这个悬念就是：to get off to a good start表示事情一开始就进行得很顺利，那么其反义词又是什么呢？若想知道它啊，我们就来听听Jim和Mary的朋友John对她们婚姻的一个说法吧。

John： If Jim and Mary are quarreling already, it looks as if their marriage gets off to a bad start.

John是说：如果Jim和Mary已经吵架了的话，这看起来他们的婚姻一开头就不顺利。

在这个句子中，显而易见to get off to a good start的翻译词就是to get off to a bad start。To get off fto a bad start的定义为：to fail to make a good start。我们再通过2个例句来理解它的意思。

e.g. The play got off to a bad start when one of the actors forgot his opening lines. （这一出戏一开始就不顺利，有一个演员忘记了开头的几句台词。）

Ps：opening lines：开场白

e.g. If things got off to a bad start then everything might go wrong.（头一样儿不顺当，样样儿就都不顺当！）

Ps：go wrong的意思为“出毛病，出国，发生故障”。例如：We're too close to home to have anything to go wrong.（我们胜利在望了，不得出一点差错。）Copy your aunt and you won't go wrong.（向你姑妈学,你就不会办错事。）

在John的表述中，我们除了要掌握get off to a bad start这个黄金短语，还要注意2个要点。

第一个要点是表示“似乎，好像，貌似”的短语：as if。在通常情况下， as if所引导的从句的谓语动词多用虚拟语气，表示所叙述的情况与事实相反。For examples: Why is she looking at me as though she knew me? （他为什么那样看我？像是认识我似的。）He behaves as if he owned the house. （他的样子好像他拥有这个房子。）但是随着语言的发展，as if后面的从句即使反映的不是事实，也可以不用虚拟语气而用陈述语气，这主要出现在口语或不太正式的文体中。例如：With the development of these new tools, it is as if man has suddenly become a millionaire of the mind.（随着这些新工具的发展，人好像突然间成为精神上的百万富翁似的。）

第二要掉是表示“看上去……”这个意思的句型：It looks … 。例如：I had a quick flip through the book and it looked very interesting.（我很快翻阅了一下那本书，看来似乎很有趣。）The smoke grew heavier and thicker till it looked like a great fog.（烟变得越来越浓，象大雾一般。）
