1. The garden party was put off because of the contrary weather.
Put something off在本句中表示“推迟，拖延”，近义词有postpone，delay，defer，suspend等。我们之前学到的set back也可表示推迟的意思。Put something off是“推迟”，put someone off呢？如果你去办事，人家说太晚了明天再来吧，这就是在put you off，即“敷衍，搪塞”。如果电视声音很大，影响你背单词了，也是put you off，即“使分心，搅扰”，主语可以为物也可为人。如果室友生活习惯不太好你不喜欢，ta的习惯就会put you off，即“使反感，使对……失去兴趣”，这里主语只能为物。例句的意思是：由於天气不好，园游会延期了。

2. The thief tried to open the locked door but in vain.
小偷试图打开这扇锁着的门，但徒劳无功。In vain在此表示“徒劳，白费力气”，即useless，近义词有pointless，futile，fruitless等。Vain一词本身即可表示“徒劳的，无效的，不成功的”，本句亦可写为：The thief tried in a vain attempt to open the locked door. 此外，in vain还可表示“无用的，无意义的，无价值的”，如：His son did not die in vain. 他的儿子没有白白死去。

3.His total working time per week fluctuated between 35 hours and 45 hours.
他每周工作时间在35至45小时间波动。Fluctuate的意思是变动、波动、上下浮动，后接between限定波动范围，fluctuate between A and B也就是在A和B之间上下波动的意思。Gold prices would likely fluctuate around current levels but could rise later this year. 黄金价格可能会在当前水平波动，但今年晚些时候可能上升。Around表示围绕，前面说到fluctuate between是指在某一范围内波动，fluctuate around表示的则是围绕某一水平出现上下波动。
