TEXT:Packed into a Mumbai train station, Indians await passage out of the city. Thousands have been leaving Mumbai as fears grow of a backlash against people from India's northeastern states. It follows violence against Muslims in Assam and neighbouring Myanmar. Clashes in recent weeks have seen 75 people killed and more than 400,000 displaced. Rumours of revenge attacks, fuelled by social media, have created a climate of fear. RAJU KUMAR, A LOCAL FROM NORTHEAST INDIA, SAYING : "When we go out at night, Muslims threaten us by saying that they will cut us into pieces. They say: 'You people are threatening us in Assam and killing us there, we will not spare you here'. So we are scared." Mumbai is not the only area forced to put on more trains. Stations in Bangalore have also seen thousands of extra passengers. The authorities say rumours are spreading like "wildfire". They have tried to assure northeast migrants that they have no reason to fear.

TEXT:Fourteen activists are to be sent back to China after being detained by Japan. The activists were held after landing on an uninhabited island claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing. Tensions flared between the nations, with China demanding the activists be released. They are now expected to arrive in Hong Kong on Friday (August 17). Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held ministerial meeting to discuss the situation. JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER YOSHIHIKO NODA SAYING (Japanese): "We arrested 14 people including Hong Kong activists on August 15 after they illegally landed on our islands. It is extremely regrettable that they illegally smuggled themselves on to our island despite our repeated warnings not to." The disputed island lies in an area believed to be rich in oil and gas. The ownership row is one of many dogging Japan's ties with its Asian neighbours.

TEXT:Violence across Afghanistan. On Wednesday at least 18 civilians are wounded in Western Afghanistan when a bomb attacked to a bicycle exploded. The reclusive Taliban leader Mullah Omar is calling on insurgents to avoid civilian deaths and focus on foreign forces. In a seven page letter released Thursday night he boasted that his forces had successfully infiltrated Afghan security forces to mount rogue attacks on foreign solders. On Friday an Afghan police militia member turned his guns on U.S. military trainers in western Farah province, killing two Americans before he was shot dead. NATO Brigadier General Gunter Katz in Kabul says this does not represent a new tactic by insurgents. NATO BRIGADIER GENERAL GUNTER KATZ , SAYING (English): "This is exactly what the Taliban is claiming, which we clear deny. Yes we can acknowledge that there are instances of infiltration, but they are about in the 10 percent area." So far this year there have been 31 incidents where Afghan forces have turned on Western troops, that compares with 21 such incidents in the while of last year.

It was South Africa's worst violence of the post Apartheid era. National Police commissioner Riah Phiyega defended her forces. NATIONAL POLICE COMMISSIONER RIAH PHIYEGA, SAYING: "The militant group stormed towards the police firing shots and wielding dangerous weapons. Police retreated systematically and were forced to utilized maxim force to defend themselves. The total deaths of the protesters currently stands at 34 with more than 78 injured." The President of Association of Mines Workers and Construction Union Joseph Mathunjwa compared the shootout to an attack to the 1960s when more than 50 people were killed when apartheid police opened fire on protesters PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIATION OF MINES WORKERS AND CONSTRUCTION UNION JOSEPH MATHUNJWA, SAYING: "I thought that the history that I read about Sharpville massacre was a history. I never thought that in 2012 we will experience the same massacre under the democratic elected government by ourselves this is the shame." On Friday, the wives and daughters of the miners staged their own protests, calling on the police tobring back the dead.
