Language Point 20

To pay for costs, cars will be billed for using high-speed toll roads. (Para. 14)

Meaning: If drivers use high-speed toll roads, they will be sent a bill demanding them to pay for costs.

pay for: 1. suffer the result of

He stopped me from getting that job and I'm going to make him pay for it.
当初他不让我接那个工作,现在我要让他为此付出代价。

I didn't bother to have the car checked, a mistake for which I paid dearly.
当时我为了省事没有检查汽车,这一失误使我付出了沉重的代价。

2. pay some money to acquire something

I paid $50 for that coat.
我花50美元买了这件大衣。

bill for: give or sent a bill stating how much money one has to pay for goods or services

Are you going to bill me for this?
你会因此而罚我款吗?

He has been billed for not parking in the right place.
他因停车地方不当而吃了罚单。

toll road: In British and American English, a toll road is a road which people have to pay to drive on.
