And what would National Day be without some time off? Empty office buildings in big cities today as the week-long National Day holiday gets underway. But, bus terminals, train-stations and airports are seeing waves of holiday makers.
More than 500 million journeys are expected during the golden week. The railway system has seen some 13 million passengers on the first day. The number is expected to top 100 million for the entire week, a 10 percent increase from last year. Heavy traffic on the highways nationwide, too.
The densely populated Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Beijing as well as its surrounding regions are expected to see the worst traffic jams. And three major airlines are operating over 42,000 flights to domestic and international destinations.
