近日，一名清华大学老师被电信诈骗1700万元（约250万美元）的消息引发了公众对大学老师工资的激烈讨论。

但是，据中新网报道，麦可思近期进行的一项调查发现，中国大学老师（college teachers）平均月收入（average monthly income）为5478元。
调查发现，大学男教师的收入与女教师的收入呈现出明显差异（income discrepancies between male and female teachers），在被调查的大学教师中，男性教师的平均月收入为5717元，高于女性教师(5240元)9个百分点。
另外，教师职称和职位的不同对于月收入影响较大，不同职称（different professional titles）教师之间的月收入差距明显。调查显示，大学本科教授的月收入为7947元，而高职高专助教（teaching assistant）的平均月收入只有3786元。
调查显示，在对月收入不满意（unsatisfied with their income）的教师群体中，有71%的人认为教师职业“收入整体偏低（the revenue for college teachers as a whole was relatively lower compared to other professions）”，67%的人认为“收入增长与物价上涨幅度不匹配（the growth of their income was not able to catch up with the rising price of commodities）”。
50.2%的本科青年教师和56.8%的高职高专青年教师有为增加个人收入（boost their personal income）而兼职（part-time jobs）的经历。
