Charlie the Chimp, who is well known for his severe cigarette smoking habit, has finally died at the old age of 52.
Charlie started smoking almost a decade ago, after some visitors to the zoo threw lit cigarettes to him in hopes he would follow their example and smoke them. He did, and he was hooked from that day on. Due to the partial to tobacco, he has become quite a famous star in the zoo, attracting tens of thousands visitors to watch every year.
For years, zookeepers have attempted to break his habit, but continuous problems with tourists and locals giving him cigarettes from their packs made it difficult.
Generally, the average lifespan for chimps is 40 years. Despite the smoking, it was not this that killed him, his keeps say. At the age of 52, he was ten years older than most chimps survive.
Even though he has been receiving special care, and a special diet including protein shakes, vitamin and mineral supplements, he succumbed to old age.
