Rupert Murdochis to share power at 21st Century Fox with his sons James and Lachlan as Chase Carey, the company’s most senior non-family figure, gives up his operational responsibilities.

Mr Carey — seen by investors as a skilled executive and steadying influence — is stepping down as operating chief but will stay on as an adviser. His contract expires next summer but he has an option to leave in December.

The changes are part of a gradual succession plan at Fox, whose assets include Fox News, the Fox broadcast network and the Hollywood film studio. The role of Mr Murdoch, 84, is reduced and Lachlan and James are lined up to run the company in tandem. Lachlan will eventually take on his father’s responsibilities with James assuming Mr Carey’s operational focus, said a person familiar with the matter.

The succession was in effect sealed a year ago when the two Murdoch sons were given fresh roles at Fox and News Corp. Lachlan’s return to the fold came a decade after he resigned as a News Corp executive and moved to Australia.
