A new study finds that 74 percent of the rich in South Korea with fortunes of one billion U.S. dollars or more were found to have inherited their wealth.
The study was produced by the Peterson Institute for International Economics after classifying the wealth of billionaires as either self-made or inherited. The study was compiled from Forbes World's Billionaires list over the past two decades.
The institute found that the percentage of billionaires in South Korea who inherited their fortunes was the fifth largest in the world out of 67 countries and two-and-half times higher than the average rate of 30 percent.
Other countries that had a high rate of the super-rich with inherited wealth were Kuwait, Finland, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates.
The study found that the rate for China stood at a mere two percent, 18 percent for Japan and 29 percent for the U.S. In Asia, the rate of billionaires with inherited fortunes stood at 37 percent in Singapore.
As reasons for the high percentage of such billionaires in South Korea, experts cited an economic structure centered on conglomerates, an immature capital market and the trend of preferring stable jobs.
Meanwhile, the study said that the number of self-made billionaires is on the rise around the world. The percentage of self-made rich people grew from 45 percent posted in 1996 to 70 percent in 2014.
