MARCELA Del Sol first noticed something wasn’t right when she stumbled upon men’s clothing “hidden” around the house.

The 42-year-old originally from Chile says she then discovered dozens of photographs in her phone that she did not remember taking. She was the subject but something was different. Her friends started falling away and she did not know why. Her long-term relationship ended suddenly.

She now knows the men’s clothing belonged to one of her “alters” and the same person was responsible for alienating those closest to her.

Ms Del Sol said she was not allowed to name the man who takes over her body. She was not allowed to name any of her six alternative personas.Ms Del Sol has what’s known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a condition characterised by the presence of two or more split personalities that have power over a person’s behaviour.

In her case, the condition is blamed on a car accident she was involved in three years ago. It was July, 2013, when her vehicle broke down on the side of the road.A speeding driver collided with Ms Del Sol’s car. She wasn’t physically injured but her brain experienced trauma.Shortly after, she discovered she wasn’t alone inside her head.

Switching between personalities happens often but there is no real pattern. It can be weeks between incidents then, for whatever reason, it happens more regularly.

One of her alters is a smoker, even though she is not. Upon waking, she says there are messages in her head. She describes her lifestyle as "secluded".

“People think of (DID) as such a tragically comic thing,” she says.

She also spends time speaking out about her condition and has written a book on the subject, hoping to help others who are experiencing the same thing.
