Russian chess champion Yuri Yeliseyev, 20, has died after falling from the balcony of a Moscow apartment block when his parkour practice went wrong.

The chess grandmaster fell from the 12th floor of the apartment last Saturday and died before an ambulance arrived.

A fan of parkour, a sport involving climbing up and leaping from walls, buildings and roofs, Yeliseyev was seen performing stunts over the summer by a neighbour, the Life channel reported.

Fellow grandmaster Daniil Dubov said on social media that Yeliseyev had been trying to climb from a window to a nearby balcony when he slipped.

Yeliseyev became a grandmaster in 2013 and clinched this year's Moscow Open. He is ranked 212th by the World Chess Federation.
