US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would stop a China-backed bid for US-based chip maker Lattice Semiconductor, citing national-security risks to halt the $1.3bn deal.

The national-security risk posed by the transaction relates to, among other things, the potential transfer of intellectual property to the foreign acquirer, the Chinese government’s role in supporting this transaction, the importance of semiconductor supply chain integrity to the United States Government, and the use of Lattice products by the United States Government.

Lattice said in November that it had struck a deal with an affiliate of private equity firm Canyon Bridge to sell itself for $1.3bn, including debt. Among the deal’s backers was China Venture Capital Fund Corporation Limited, a Chinese corporation owned by Chinese state-owned entities, according to a statement from the US Treasury.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, or CFIUS — a government agency that reviewed deals that could result in a foreign person or entity gaining control over a US business — had recommended against the transaction’s approval, the White house said.
