伯纳德·雷德(约翰·特拉沃尔塔饰)是一名前美国雇佣兵。他带领着由四个人组成的抢劫团伙，劫持了一辆纽约地铁上的所有乘客。以此要挟纽约市政府，如果不在规定的时间内缴纳赎金，将开始杀害人质。扎格力·加勃(丹泽尔·华盛顿饰)是一名纽约地铁的调度员，同时也是高速运输管理局的中尉。他试图从中斡旋，通过与劫匪的谈判，来解救人质。但是，眼看时间紧迫，加勃便决定将自己作为人质抵押，交换其他的乘客。一场惊心动魄，斗智斗勇的拯救人质的行动，就此展开……
