Question:
"Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world."
Practicality and pragmatism, which all poweres and talents must serve, have now become the mainstream ideology, the great idol that we adore and admire, even a way of life. The majority of us hold fast to such an idea that anything that is not obviously practical has little, if any value in today's world.Although such a claim is not without merits, it is my belief that what in many's eyes is not practical is as a matter of fact should be attached great significance to.
This is not to deny that the world is ever thriveing and progressing with practicality.Science and technology in modern era primarily serve this purpose. For instance, when it comes to scientific research, it is the most urgent and heatedly debated issues, say the vaccine of AIDS or the therapy for cancer, that get the most financial support or fundings from government or any concerned organization.Whereas the theoretical researches more often than not suffer from a dearth of fundings.
In the realm of education, students always prefer majors or courses that promise them ideal careers in the job market,Hence, classes like economics, biotechnology, law are under most circumstances full of people while seats in the classrooms for history, philosophy, literature are seldom,if ever fully occupied. We should see clearly in what aspects praticality benefits us given the impact on our daily lives every technological breakthrough brings us.Nevertheless, contrary to many's belief, what is not obviously practical does not automatically turn out to be of little value.Take our current attitude towards liberal arts for example.None of us take it very seriouly in this practical world.Obviouly,The appreciation of a oil painting in the middle ages has nothing to do one's promotion in careers, nor it has anything to do with the sales of a kind of software.
Yet as it is so often pointed out that our next generation, even ourselves are suffering from a rape of creativity and imagination. We are good at memorizing facts and figures, and we master the practical skill of reasoning, logical thinking as well as calculating, but we accquire an disability to creat and imagine at the same time.Common sense and experiences tell us that the best and most effective way to develop and enhance our creativity and imagination is to be exposed to any great art works, literature that appears impractical and futile in today's world. Thus,it may be high time that we stopped and reflect seriously on how the problems must be solved.
And to this I want to add, such refinements and cultivation of human minds and manifestion of goodness of humantiy shall at no time be interperted as unpractical and thusly of little value even in today's practical world. To be fair, the seemly unpracticals are not totally exclusive of the practicals, that is these is hope for us to expect the combination of the two in each and every field .For example, we can and should devise a curriculum that both emphsizing practicality and the less practical but useful for us.Students are encouraged and guided to choose those fit their career goals and those cultivate the minds. To sum up,that practicality and pragmatism indeed do us good is undeniable given the comfort and convenience it brings into contemporary lives.Yet practicality and pragmatism to excess may run the risk of driving people to pursue short-term interests, overlooking long-term ones.Give these,we shold refrain from being overwhelmed by the detrimental effects of practicility and pragmatism .
