第40课 村庄牧师
Near yonder copse, where once the garden smiled,
在小灌木从那边,曾经有花园般的微笑
And still where many a garden flower grows wild,
那儿还曾经有花儿茂盛的成长
There, where a few torn shrubs the place disclose,
那儿一些撕裂的灌木闭塞了那个地方
The village preacher's modest mansion rose.
那儿是牧师低调的公馆
A man he was to all the country dear,
他是全国尊敬的人
And passing rich with forty pounds a year;
每年有40磅的丰裕收入
Remote from towns he ran his godly race,
带着正值的使命从城镇来到这里
Nor e'er had changed, nor wished to change, his place.
他既不也不希望改变这个地方
Unskilful he to fawn, or seek for power,
他不会摇尾乞怜也不会寻求权力
By doctrines fashioned to the varying hour;
他不时地传播流行的教义
Far other aims his heart had learned to prize,
为了其他目的他学会了珍惜
More bent to raise the wretched than to rise.
更弯曲是为了拯救不幸而非激起不幸
His house was known to all the vagrant train;
所有流浪者都知道他的房子
He chid their wanderings, but relieved their pain.
他责骂流浪者但是减轻他们的痛苦
The long-remembered beggar was his guest,
长期被记住的乞讨者是他的客人
Whose beard descending swept his aged breast;
乞讨者们的胡须扫到他上了年纪的胸脯
The ruined spendthrift, now no longer proud,
毁灭的败家子现在不再自傲了
Claimed kindred there, and had his claim allowed;
他让人们的呼声被允许
The broken soldier, kindly bade to stay,
受伤的战士恳求收留
Sat by his fire and talked the night away,
坐在他的火炉边,交流了一个晚上
Wept o'er his wounds, or, tales of sorrow done,
为他受的伤而哭泣,讲述悲伤的故事
Shouldered his crutch, and showed how fields were won.
用拐杖说明他们赢得了多大的疆土
Pleased with his guests, the good man learned to glow,
为他的客人感到高兴,这个好牧师学会了激动
And quite forgot their vices, in their woe;
完全忘记了在他们的悲伤中他们的恶习
Careless their merits or their faults to scan,

His pity gave, ere charity began.

Thus to relieve the wretched was his pride,

And even his failings leaned to virtue's side;
