But it wasn't really as effective

as the psychological factors

explaining 30% of their sleep complaints

And those were depression and stress

Now stress didn't come out as the significant variable

because stress and depression

are so interrelated with each other

but those two psychological issues

explain a lot more of the sleep complaints

than the physiological variables

And then there are some social factors

Being in the supporter of a relationship

multiple roles, wife, mother employee

have nothing to do with their sleep complaints

But ethnicity and education

explain about 4% of the variance of their sleep problems

So again, mostly, psychological and health issues

To summarize these studies

we really don't know much

about women's sleep in midlife

and how it looks before they going to menopause

Most studies were actually looked at women

who are menopausal

and that they had actually had no periods for a year

and then they are eligible for studies

We were looking at women in that decade before

and we drop them from the research

once they became menopausal or had hysterectomy

or went on hormone therapy

So we started to learn a bit more

about women in this age group

The psycho-social factors play a larger role than hormones

And women self-report more problems than men

but the objective measures are very similar

in all these studies

Now in the African American women

who are self-reporting poor sleep

and actually sleeping less

the objective measures

are similar to their subjective reports
