The other word that I often hear is booty. What is booty? B-o-o-t-y.

That means the same as loot.

loot就是抢劫到的那个赃物.

But normally we use it when we talk about pirate booty, so it's the whole idea you got a massive treasure chest filled with gold and silver and precious stones. Normally we would say that's pirate booty.

This could only really happen like, I guess back then when ships were transferring these precious metals, and nowadays there are no precious metals on the ships.

You don't know, there's actually quite a few ships that get robbed by piracy. So you think of all those container ships around the world.

Oh. Perhaps, yes.

And at least these Spanish galleons they had cannon. I can't think of many container ships having a cannon on board.

And also pirate ships that strike me as very hierarchical, because they're completely men, right? And men at sea and with no laws and whatever.

Well. You say that there were actually a few female pirates as well.

How does that work? I would think, yeah, I can't imagine that.

It is true.

It must be badass women.

There're some great stories which we don't really have time to go into, but if you're interested, I would say it's only worth having a look at.

Yeah. But basically these pirates and also sometimes is that the word mutiny?

Yes.

Sometimes like if the leader is not strong enough and that people want to rebel against him, then there's a mutiny就是会像兵变一样的.

Yeah. So we can talk about a mutiny on a ship. We can also talk about a mutiny in the army, so it's when the sailors or the soldiers decide that their commander is not good enough.

So the most famous example is also around this time. And it's called Mutiny on the Bounty.

On the Bounty?

The Bounty was a famous ship and the mutineers, in the end, they just went to a small island in the pacific, and there's actually an island in the pacific which their descendants still live on.

I see. Nowadays do people still believe that there is some hidden treasure somewhere on these little islands, small islands?

That is a common stereotype that pirates will always bury their treasure, but to be honest, why would they, let's be honest.

They will probably have spent it.

Exactly. If you're a pirate, you spend a lot of time and effort to steal the treasure. Why would you then bury it?

True.

But having said that, there are stories of famous shipwrecks in the Caribbean, and people are still searching for these shipwrecks.

哦，就沉船的那个残骸。Maybe there is some pirate booty or pirate loot.

There are a few ships wrecks that they say though billions of dollars’ worth of gold and silver under the sea.

Wow, certainly something to think about.

Absolutely.

But one thing I have noticed up till now, though we were talking about a lot of these like booty things, pieces of eight, it just sounds very lingo, like jargony.

Yes.

听上去就像行话、黑话这种. I know that pirate language is a completely different category like what 安澜 mentioned in the very beginning, says Ahoy matey or like Arghh.

Yes.

Let's talk about pirate language.

Yeah, so if you watch anything about pirates, you probably hear these expressions. So, “shiver my timbers”.

shiver my timbers. Shiver is 颤抖，shake.

Yeah. Break into pieces.

Oh. So it's, how do we use it?

It's a bit like saying “oh, my god!”.

You scare me that sorts of thing…

Yeah, or you like, you’re surprised.

Oh, I see, shiver my timbers.

Timbers mean the wooden part of the ship, so it means.

It's not your wooden leg, is it?

No. That's also a stereotype. They all have wooden legs and a parrot and an eye patch.

Yeah.

Another one is “Davy Jones' locker”.

Who's Davy Jones?

I don't know. But the actual expression means the bottom of the sea. And it means the grave of those who die at sea.

Okay. Is it like the mafia lingo of sleeping with the fish?

Yeah. So if you say he's in Davy Jones' locker, then it normally means…

He died at sea.

He died and is at the bottom of the sea, because anyone who dies at sea, they bury them at sea.

I see, I see. The other one I often hear is “Avast ye matey”. What does that mean? Matey is mate, friend.

Avast means stop or cease. So it basically means stop and listen to me.

So if you're doing something and I want you to listen to me and go like, I’m like “Avast ye matey”.

Yeah. It's gonna sounded very weird, but you can say that.

In pirate movies.

Yep. Another one is “Ahoy landlubber”.

Landlubber?

Landlubber is a term that was used by sailors. It just basically means anyone who's unfamiliar with the sea or sailing.

For example, if it's your first time on a ship, you don't know what to do. You'll be clumsy.

I see. I see. 有点旱鸭子, 那个感觉。

Yeah.

Ahoy landlubber. Ahoy just hi.

Yeah, ahoy is a nautical term and it just means you call out to another ship or a person.

Ahoy!

Yeah, or hello.

Hello. You know there's a like a chocolate chip cookie brand called Chips Ahoy.对，趣多多, 它的英文名不知道大家注意到没有, 叫Chips Ahoy, 我还专门查了一下, 它就是取材自 nautical term, 就是probably pirate terms, Chips Ahoy.

And in terms of very random facts as well, when the telephone was first invented, there was a massive discussion about whether or not to use ahoy or hello.

In the end, hello won, so hello became what we say to people.

When we call imagine if they chose ahoy, then I'll be like “ahoy,安澜！”.

Yeah. Absolutely.

Pretending to be pirates.

Yeah. And another expression is “Land ho me heartie”

Land ho is just like, look, there's the land.

Yep. So land ho is a cry from the lookout. So it just basically means there's land.

瞭望台, 大家看海盗船上面有一个瞭望台, 就说Land ho!前面就是陆地了。

Yeah.

Ok, I have to mention this “Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum.”

That's just this very stereotypical pirate of expression and it just means like sort of drinking and celebrating.

Isn't that just I think that was in Treasure Island.

Yo ho ho just means like “yeah, I’m having fun” and “a bottle of rum”, because they drink rum.

Is rum really the quintessential drink associated with pirates?

Yes.

Because the Caribbean.

Yeah. Because the Caribbean, and nowadays like rum is associated with the Caribbean and also sailors.

朗姆酒. 我相信大家喜欢看什么金银岛或者各种各样的海盗故事, 都知道这个朗姆酒.我个人还 I like rum especially like dark rum.

I’m not a big fan, but originally on ships with the Royal Navy, you used to get rum as part of the rations. So every day you would get some rum. And if you didn't get the rum, then people get very very very angry.

And they turn pirate on you.

Yeah, pretty much.

Ok. Before we wrap up, 安澜, can you recommend us? I know there are lots of pirate movies, but are there any good TV shows?

Well. I wanna recommend this quite recent one. I think it's on the second series now Our Flag Means Death.

哦，这个中文名好像叫升起海盗旗. It’s a comedy.

It's a historic comedy about two real famous pirates, Stede Bonnet who was known as the gentleman pirate. So no one's quite sure about where he came from. In the show. It shows him as just this rich kid who wants a bit of excitement; and a very famous ferocious pirate called Blackbeard.

黑胡子，yes, that was almost a legend.

Yeah. And even though it set in the past, it discussed a lot of modern ideas such as gender, sexuality. It's just fun to watch.

Is it a British one?

I’m not sure if it's British, actually the two main characters, the two main actors are from New Zealand.

I see, I see. This one I think before today's podcast, 安澜 recommended it. I took one peek at it, it looks fun.

It looks fun. It's one of those really sort of quirky historical comedy. 如果你喜欢那种比较恶搞历史的那种, 我觉得你会喜欢这个片子叫Our Flag Means Death. Alright. It talks about the sensitive sides of pirates.
