When you weigh 126 stone and you break your leg, that can cause serious problems.

It's what happened to Amara, the white rhino at Knowsley Safari, when a bit of rough play with her rhino friends got too rough.

"She's a boisterous, playful individual by nature. She likes to play with the adults, and obviously, the adults are a lot bigger than her, so invariably there's, you know, potential that she could get injured."

But medics couldn't find any records anywhere of anyone carrying out the kind of operation that would help them fix Amara's leg.

So this operation was a world first.

And not without challenges for the surgeons who had to cut into her rough, tough rhino skin.

"Closing the skin was a bit of a battle, and we actually managed to break 12 needles while closing the skin.

Weeks later it was removed, and the two-year-old was reunited with her mum, Maru.
