I’m Simu Liu, and today I’ll be reading The Sound of Silence
我是刘思慕，今天我要读的是《寂静之声》，
by Katrina Goldsaito, and illustrated by Julia Kuo.

Little Yoshio wiggled with anticipation.
小吉生满心期待地轻轻扭动身体。
Three…two…one!
三……二……一！
He threw open the front door.
他猛地打开前门。
The sounds of the city swirled all around him—
城市的各种声音如漩涡般环绕着他——
Tokyo was like a symphony hall!
东京就像一个交响乐厅！
Yoshio listened to the sound of his boots squishing and squashing through the puddles,
吉生听着他的靴子呱唧呱唧地踩过水坑，
and the tiny raindrops pattering on his umbrella.
还有小雨滴噼啪噼啪地打在雨伞上。
The sound of his giddy giggles made him giggle even more.
他痴痴地发出咯咯的笑声，这声音让他笑得更厉害了。
Suddenly, Yoshio heard the strangest sound,
突然，吉生听到了最奇怪的声音，
high and then low, squeaky and vibrating—amazing!
那声音忽高忽低，短促尖细，又有阵阵颤音——太神奇了！
It was a koto player carefully tuning her instrument.
是一位琴师正在仔细调试她的琴。
Then the koto player played.
接着琴师开始弹奏。
The notes were twangy and twinkling;
那些音符颤动、闪烁，
they tickled Yoshio’s ears!
轻挠着吉生的耳朵！
When the song finished, Yoshio said,
一曲终了，吉生说：
“Sensei, I love sounds, but I’ve never heard a sound like that!”
“老师，我喜欢声音，但我从未听过这样的声音！”
The koto player laughed, and it sounded like the metal bell that swayed in the wind in Mama’s garden.
琴师笑了，那笑声听起来就像妈妈花园里的金属铃铛在风中摇曳。
“Sensei,” Yoshio said, “do you have a favorite sound?”
“老师，”吉生说，“您有最喜欢的声音吗？”
“The most beautiful sound,” the koto player said, “is the sound of ma, of silence.”
“最美的声音，”琴师说，“是‘间’的声音，也就是寂静之声。”
“Silence?” Yoshio asked.
“寂静？”吉生问道。
But the koto player just smiled a mysterious smile and went back to playing.
但琴师只是神秘地笑了笑，然后又继续弹琴了。
Yoshio bowed to the koto player and ran to school.
吉生向琴师鞠躬，然后跑向学校。
“Where can I find silence?”
“我在哪里可以找到寂静？”
Yoshio wondered as he listened to the thwack of his boots on the pavement.
吉生一边听着靴子在人行道上发出的砰砰声，一边想着。
He listened for it through the school day, but there was always some kid making noise.
他在学校一整天都在听寂静之声，但总有一些孩子在制造噪音。
At recess, the sun came out and Yoshio went to the quietest place he knew— the bamboo grove at the edge of the playground.
课间休息时，太阳出来了，吉生去了他所知道的最寂静的地方——操场边缘的竹林。
But even there, the bamboo made a takeh-takeh-takeh sound as the wind banged its stalks together.
但是即使在那里，当风把竹子吹得相互碰撞时，竹子也会发出“嗒咔嗒咔”的声音。
He closed his eyes and heard the swish-swish-swish of the wind making the leaves talk.
他闭上眼睛，听到萧萧风声让竹叶低语。
It was beautiful, but it wasn’t silence.
这声音很美，但不是寂静之声。
