Something that will really, truly, completely and utterly change the way that you use English is by understanding intensifiers.
一个真正、确实、完全、彻底改变你的英语使用的办法就是理解强调词。

This is what we use to add more emotion to your English.
强调词就是我们用来为英语增添更多情感的词。
We all know intensifiers like very and really.
我们都知道像very和really这样的强调词。
They're super common.
这种词超级常见。
But what if we want to express ourselves with more emotion?
但是如果我们想用更强烈的情感来表达自己呢?
We can use things like particularly, incredibly, absolutely.
我们可以使用像“尤其”“难以置信地”“绝对地”这样的词。
These are intensifiers.
这些是强调词。
But to understand how to use them properly, first we need to know gradable and non-gradable adjectives.
但是要了解如何正确使用它们,首先我们需要知道什么是可分级和不可分级形容词。
What is a gradable adjective?
什么是可分级形容词?
An easy way to explain this is with the weather.
一个简单的解释办法是用天气来说明。
Hot. Very hot. Roasting.
热。非常热。酷热/烤死人了。
The meaning of this adjective gets stronger and stronger when we move from hot to very hot and roasting.
当我们从“热”到“非常热”再到“酷热”时,这个形容词的意思会变得越来越强烈。
Roasting means very hot.
酷热的意思就是非常热。
So I can't really say very roasting.
所以我不能说“非常酷热”。
It doesn't make sense.
这说不通。
Here, I need to use a strong intensifier like absolutely.
所以在这里我需要使用像“绝对”这样的程度深的强调词。
It's absolutely roasting outside.
外面绝对酷热。
Another example would be cold.
另一个例子是冷。
Cold, very cold, freezing.
冷,非常冷,冻死了。
Freezing means very very cold, so I'm not gonna say it's very freezing.
冻死了表示非常非常冷,所以我不会说“非常冻死了”。
Again, I can say, oh, it's absolutely freezing outside.
我可以说“哦,外面绝对冻死了”。
These are examples of gradable adjectives.
以下是可分级形容词的例子。
We can learn them in pairs to make it easier.
我们可以成对学习它们,这样会更容易。
He is particularly smart.
他特别聪明。
He is exceptionally intelligent.
他聪颖过人。
Intelligent is a stronger adjective than smart, so we are going to use a stronger intensifier.
intelligent是一个比smart程度更深的形容词,所以我们要用一个语气更强的强调词。
Or: This grammar seems particularly hard.
又如:这个语法似乎特别难。
Don't worry. It's not completely impossible.
别担心。学会并不是完全不可能的。
Hard, impossible.
难的,不可能的。
One adjective is stronger than the other, so we're going to use a stronger intensifier.
前一个形容词比后一个程度更深,所以我们要用一个语气更强的强调词。
Now, what about non-gradable adjectives?
那么不可分级的形容词呢?
Sometimes an adjective can't be graded.
有时候形容词是不能分级的。
If something's perfect, it's one hundred percent.
如果某事是完美的,那它的程度就是百分之百的。
It can't be very, very perfect.
它不可能非常非常完美。
It's already perfect.
它已经是完美了/已经好到了极点。
So I can use totally.
所以我可以用“完全/极其”。
I am totally perfect.
我是极其完美的。
Thanks, I know.
谢谢,我知道。
Or dead.
再比如“死了的”。
If something's dead, it's completely dead.
如果某物死了,它就完全死了。
There's nothing you can do about it.
对此你无能为力。
These are non-gradable adjectives.
这些都是不可分级的形容词。
There you go.
学会了吧。
Once you know if an adjective is gradable, weak or strong, or non-gradable,
一旦你知道一个形容词是可分级的——弱的还是强的——还是不可分级的,
you can then decide what intensifier to use to make your English completely, truly, utterly, exceptionally more exciting.
你就可以决定用什么强调词来让你的英语变得完全、真正、绝对、格外地更妙趣横生。
