Mini English Lessons are such a great way to practise my English.
看《迷你英语课》是练习英语的好方法。
You're quite right.
你说的挺正确的。
What? No, I'm completely right.
什么?不,我说的完全正确/一点没错。
What does "you're quite right" mean?
you're quite right是什么意思?
If you think it means you're fairly right or you're kind of right, you're quite wrong.
如果你认为意思是“你挺正确”或“你有点正确”,那你就大错特错了。

When we use quite with a non-gradable adjective, it means completely or absolutely.
当我们将quite与不可分级的形容词一起使用时,它表示“完全”或“绝对”。
So, "you're quite right" means you're completely right.
所以you're quite right表示你完全正确/一点没错。
"You're quite wrong" means you're absolutely wrong.
You're quite wrong表示你绝对错误。
Non-gradable adjectives are adjectives that we cannot make stronger or weaker.
不可分级的形容词是我们无法使其变得更强或更弱的形容词。
They are already at a hundred percent.
这种形容词的程度已经是百分之百了。

So why do so many people think that quite means fairly or more or less?
那么为什么许多人认为quite的意思是“相当/挺”或“或多或少”呢?
Because it usually does.
因为它通常确实是这个意思。
When we use quite with gradable adjectives, it means fairly, reasonably, approximately.
当我们将quite与可分级形容词一起使用时,它的意思是相当/挺、还算、大约。
Gradable adjectives are the ones that you can make stronger or weaker by adding modifiers, like very or a bit or quite.
可分级形容词是你可以通过添加修饰词来使其更强或更弱的形容词,比如非常、有点、还算这种修饰词。
So when I say, that's quite a good idea, because good is a gradable adjective, quite means fairly or reasonably.
所以当我说“那是个还算好的主意”时,因为good是可分级形容词,所以quite的意思是“相当/挺”或“还算”。
It's not the best idea in the world, but it's quite good.
那不是世界上最好的主意,但也相当/挺不错。
So if you're not sure when quite means fairly and when quite means completely, the clue is in the adjective.
如果你不确定quite表示“相当/挺”还是“完全”,那么你可以在形容词里找到线索。
If you can make the adjective stronger or weaker, then quite means fairly.
如果你可以使形容词更强或更弱,那么quite就表示相当。
If the adjective is already at one hundred percent, like right, wrong, perfect, then that means that quite means absolutely or completely.
如果形容词已经是百分之百的程度了,比如“正确的”“错误的”“完美的”,那么quite的意思就是“绝对”或“完全”。
Even if I say so myself, I think this video was quite perfect.
就算我自己夸自己,我也觉得这个视频绝对完美/百分百完美。
