Hong Kong Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong has vowed that Hong Kong has full of confidence and ability to ensure a smooth Olympic torch relay in the city.
"We hope the torch relay in Hong Kong on May 2 will be conducted in a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. We don't want the relay to be affected by protests or any violent actions."
Lee said the torch run in the city would be smooth and peaceful while an adequate number of police officers would be deployed to protect the flame and keep order.
His confidence was shared by Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, who said the government was making careful preparations.
"In Hong Kong, there's no one in support of Tibetan separatists. Most Hong Kong people are in favour of the Olympic Games."
Hong Kong Olympic Committee President Timothy Fok Tsun-ting said he was confident next month's ceremony would go smoothly.
"So far, the relay route in Hong Kong has not been changed and shortened. I believe there would be no serious incidents during the relay of the torch and I have full confidence in the police and in security in Hong Kong."
Meanwhile, the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong has set up the Torchbearer Selection Sub-committee to choose 84 of the 120 Olympic torchbearers.
The 84 people come from across Hong Kong's 18 districts and have made contributions to the city's sport, such as athletes and representatives from the education, cultural and other sectors.
Twenty-four of the torchbearers will be selected through selection activities organised by sponsors.
The remaining 12 torchbearers will be nominated by the Beijing Organization Committee for the Games.
The list of torchbearers will be announced after final approval by the committee.
