Swedish Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt will attend the forthcoming Boao Forum in southern Chinese province of Hainan and meet Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. What will he talk about during his visit to China? As CRI reporter XueFei found out, climate change and sustainable development issues will be on his agenda.
Xuefei: Prime Minister Reinfeldt said bilateral relations between Sweden and China have become more and more intense since there is a great interest in Sweden concerning China as a country, a culture, business interest and China's important link to many international issues. At the same time he also sees China's interest in Sweden.
"We also have the background that we were the first country to recognize China and I always felt that we have had even though we have different political systems, very sound and good dialogue between our countries."
Sweden will be the incoming Presidency of the EU next year. At the same time the UN-led new climate agreement will be discussed in Copenhagen. While being active in Europe, Reinfeldt also likes to discuss with the Chinese leaders about what the industrialized countries can do and what China can do to meet the global threat of climate change.
The Prime Minister said that Sweden is a small country, but it has had the opportunity to be a very sustainable society. This can be of great interest to the Chinese leaders.
"I think it is important to say that we have shown that you can combine economic growth with reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, our economy has grown somewhere 44-45% since 1990s, the start of Kyoto processes, during the same time we have 9% reduction of our green house gas emissions. And I think that is an important message because I know that there is a feeling sometimes when we talk about climate change, some countries say that you should slow down your economic growth, something like that, that is not my perspective."
Prime Minister Reinfeldt said through using green technology, better energy efficiency can be achieved. People can use renewable fuel in new cars that are put into the market, building sustainable cities and houses which do not need much added energy to heat. People can put a price on coal to send a signal of reducing the use of coal and increasing the interest in using renewable energy such as solar and wind power by using tax incentives.
He is also interested in making green technology more commercially interesting between the two countries.
The Prime Minister also wishes the Beijing Olympics a success and he said that he sees a very bright development between China and Sweden.
