Zeng Shao-xuan made history at the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 tournament
The main draw matches of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 tournament kicked off Sunday in the outskirts of a sunny Shanghai.
Only four main draw matches were scheduled for the day, and the biggest surprise so far is Zeng Shaoxuan's 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 upset of Israeli Dudi Sela.
Currently 396th on the ATP ranking, Zeng beat 44th-ranked Sela in the ninth game of the final set, after Sela managed to save a few breakpoints.
Zeng says the gap in ranking did not affect his game.
"The ranking does not necessarily reflect the competitiveness of a certain player at a certain match. I did not give up simply because I was playing someone ranked high above me, and the result proves I was right."
Zeng will play world No. 7 and fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the next round later this week.
Shanghai is the final leg of what is called the "Asian Swing" of the ATP World Tour. The previous two stops were Beijing and Tokyo.
