Emergency warnings remain in place for multiple blazes burning in central Tasmania. The communities of Barren Tier, Tods Corner, Penstock Lagoon, Miena, Shannon and Liawenee are being warned that fires will threaten homes. Residents have been told that smoke and ash will also make it difficult to see and breathe. More than 10-thousand hectares have been burnt and firefighters are hoping today's milder conditions will help them get the upper hand ahead of more hot weather on Friday.
South Australia is expected to face more extreme heat today, putting firefighters on high alert. And Adelaide could record its hottest ever day tomorrow — with temperatures in the mid forties predicted. The previous hottest was 46-point-one degrees in 1939.
Police are investigating a stabbing in a Sydney hospital waiting room last night. A 29-year old woman allegedly stabbed a 45-year old man in the back at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has undergone surgery in what police describe as an unprovoked attack.
Two films have dominated this year's Oscar nominations. 'Roma' and 'The Favourite' have received 10 nominations each ahead of the 91st Academy Awards next month. Roma is Netflix's first ever nomination for Best Picture. Australian production designer Fiona Crombie and screenwriter Tony McNamara were both acknowledged for their work on 'The Favourite'.
