The most successful parasites are those that are never recognized by their hosts. Instead, they make their hosts do the work for them.
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's newest film, a satire called Parasite, examines the idea of "parasites" in society. It won the Palme d'Or award, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, on May 25. The prize jury was unanimous in its decision.
This black comedy tells the story of a lower-class family of four. There's Ki-taek, the unemployed father, daughter Chung-sook in her 20s, and younger son Ki-woo. They live together with the mother in a dirty basement apartment. According to director Bong, the family only hope for "an ordinary life, nothing special". Instead, they accidentally discover a novel way to improve both their social and financial situations: invading another family's household.
With a fake college diploma, an old school friend helps Ki-woo get a lucrative tutoring job in the home of the wealthy Park family. Things get stranger when Ki-woo finds similar jobs for his father and sister. By hiding their family relationships, this "crooked" family looks set to live off the Parks' lavish income.
This situation creates humor in a film about poverty, desperation and debt. In an interview with the website High On Films, Bong called his film a "tragicomedy". After all, he explained, people from different social classes rarely ever meet or interact with each other.
One way they do interact is through employment. "The servant is someone with an intimate knowledge of his or her employer," wrote Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw. Part of that knowledge is learning and understanding the reality of social class.
As Bong intensifies the family's situation – and the humor – the story takes more than one unexpected turn. In the end, viewers may wonder who the parasites actually are.
"Parasite is a story of two families from extremely different environments coming across each other. It deals with the laughter, the horror and the sorrow of people living together," Bong told Variety. "It might sound self-contradicting, but the different backgrounds of the two families also mirror the universal gap between [the] rich and the poor."
