For thousands of years yoga was practiced mainly in India. Yoga exercises were part of the three Indian religions: Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. In a strict sense, yoga is not a religion; it is a method that can be used by anyone to pursue their own religious or non-religious goals. Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism, practiced yogic meditation, which is still a central part of Buddhism today.
Yoga was almost unknown to the West until the 1960s. Since then yoga’s popularity keeps growing. Across the United States, there are so many people who want to learn yoga that yoga schools are having difficulty keeping up with the demand.
