Respected Mr. Matthé, Respected Executive Vice Governor Zhong Yangsheng, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good afternoon!
Before the grand opening of the 2007 International Consultative Conference on the Future Economic Development of Guangdong Province, Siemens launched the Green Village Program at the White Swan Hotel by the charming Pearl River to help improve the drinking water safety and save energy in the rural areas of Guangdong. This has opened up a new chapter for the cooperation between Siemens and Guangdong Province.
Over the years, Guangdong Provincial People's Government has attached great importance to the development of rural areas. With rural economic development as the priority, we have made outstanding achievements by actively exploring new ways to manage the balanced country and township development, to make the industry backup the agricultural growth and to enable urbanization to support the rural development. At the same time, we have also exerted great efforts on resolving practical issues, which influence the interests of local villagers, to effectively promote the building of a socialist new countryside. Since 1999, increasing investment has been made to the rural power grid. It is estimated that by the end of this year, the total investment of our province to the rural power grid will be about 25 billion yuan, which will greatly improve the rural power grid structure and the reliability of the power supply. Moreover, the power consumption of rural area is also increasing and grows more environment-friendly. The drinking water safety in the rural areas is a critical issue closely related to the interests of the countryside residents and the overall economic and social development of Guangdong as well as the construction of a well-off society. Therefore, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government has paid high attention to this issue and listed the program of improving the drinking water standard in the countryside as one of the Ten Projects of Common Aspiration. So far we have committed 4,500 million yuan into this project and resolved the drinking water safety issue for about 7.6 million rural residents. By the year 2010 we will enable another 7.5 million people to drink safe potable water.
In line with the theme of "Innovation" for the present International Consultative Conference, Siemens initiates the Green Village Program in Guangdong to help improve the daily water quality and promote the environmental protection and energy saving education in the remote rural areas of the province. The program well matches our current policy and working agenda and is a visible sign of Siemens' strong commitment to social responsibility as well as its long-term strategic vision. With the implementation of the project, we believe the drinking water condition in the pilot villages will be greatly improved. The program will also demonstrate advanced technologies and very good concepts for addressing the drinking water safety issue in the rural areas. I'm sure the local government and the people will definitely warmly welcome the program.
We will fully support the experts from Siemens together with the water resources and public health authorities and the local governments for the project implementation. Meanwhile, we will seize this opportunity to promote our efforts in delivering drinking water safety and improve the public awareness of environmental protection and energy saving in the Guangdong countryside so as to accelerate the construction of socialist new countryside and pave a solid foundation for a well-off society. We hope that we can gain further support and help from Siemens for the implementation of Green Village Program in the future.
Finally, we wish Siemens business in Guangdong and China a great success and wish the Siemens Green Village Program huge success.
Thank you!
