If you let people's perception of you dictate your behavior, you will never grow as a person. But if you leave yourself open to experience, despite what others think, then you will learn and grow.

dictate v.
从原意派生出一些看起来很不相同的转义。原意是“口授（让别人书面记下来）”。
I dictated my order over the phone.
我透过电话口述了命令。
但是经过转义，成了“强加某事物(于某人)”或“指挥”、“摆布”。

向工人们定下规则
She refused to be dictated to by anyone.
她不肯听从任何人的指挥。
由于dictate有“（不容分说地）决定”的意思，所以也可以用来表示“大权在握，说一不二”，因此，派生的名词dictator就是“独裁者”，dictatorship就是“独裁”或“专政”。
