翻译加油站：

初看原译颇讲得通，但是仔细推敲就会发现问题。如果他真在安娜那儿度过了一天，那就不仅仅是stopped the car（“将汽车临时停下来”，甚至可以不一定要关发动机，比如遇到红灯时），而一定会parked the car（停放在一定位置，当然要关发动机）。关键问题还在于pass the time of day不等于spend the (whole) day，严格说，the time of day中的day一词原有的“（一）天”的概念已经淡化了。

《英语习语大词典》把time of day列为一条，给了四个解释：“1.（钟表上的）时刻；2.（某个）时刻，现时，目前；3. 当前的情况，真实的状态；4. 最新的流行式样。”这样看来，pass the time of day充其量只能是过了较短的时间。可是问题还不仅仅是时间长短，该词典中pass the time of day with sb. 是作为另一条成语列出的，其解释是：“（与某人）寒暄，问候，（见面时）互道早安（晚安）。”所以“他”并没有和安娜一起共度任何时光，当然更谈不上度过了一天 / 消磨了一天时间，只是停车打了个招呼而已。要是真的一起共度了一段时间，只需简单说spend some time together。

英语中还有一些短语，其中的the time of day也不能从字面上去理解，如：know the time of day：机灵、能随机应变或消息灵通；not give somebody the time of day：很讨厌某人；put somebody up to the time of day：使某人了解某事内情或最新进展。

如何“度过”时间有许多表达方式，一般的“花时间”是：pass the/one's time (doing something), spin out time, fill in/up (the) time, pass the time away, dedicate one's time (to...), devote one's time (to...), fill in one's spare time。

如果是没有事情做，即when time hangs heavy on one's hand/ one has time to burn,“消磨时间”有许多说法，大部分的意思可从字面推导出来：while away/doze away/idle away/fool away/fritter away/loiter away time, squander time, cheat the time, kill time, waste time等。
