Bill Young dies at 82
在任最久共和党众议员去世
After 22 terms Bill Young was the longest serving Republican member of the U.S. Congress. He died on Friday at the age of 82,less than two weeks after he revealed he planned to retire. He'd been in hospital with back problems he suffered as a result of a plane crash in 1970. His family said he died from complications related to a chronic injury. There'll be a special election to fill Young's Florida seat but the result won't affect the balance of power in the house where Republicans hold a 32-seat majority.

Australia rain hopes fade

By Saturday Australian fire-fighters were saying nearly 200 homes had been destroyed by the New South Wales wildfires. It's feared more will be lost as hopes faded for rain over the weekend.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's announced a financial aid package for those who've lost their homes. But some whose homes have already been reduced to ashes are having to come to terms with the loss of more than just a roof over their heads.

The Australian Defence Department says it's investigating whether a large fire west of Sydney is linked to explosive ordnance training in the area at the time it started.

Police halt Maldives election

The Maldives' planned presidential election on Saturday was stopped in its tracks without a single vote cast. Police halted the ballot before it even began despite a court ruling that it should go ahead.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) FUAD THOWFEEK, MALDIVES ELECTION COMMISSIONER, SAYING: "We will not be able to hold elections today because police blocked our work. They have a lot of police officers down on the ground floor of this building and then they don't allow our staff to take out any ballot papers, ballot boxes or pencils, note books, or anything."

The voter registry signed by former president Mohamed Nasheed wasn't ready by Friday because of objections by some of his rivals. There was confusion whether the polls could open without the candidates signing a new registry. Police chiefs insisted they were acting independently.

So we believe that we are not, as an independent institution, forcing someone to stop doing something."

The police action came despite a Supreme Court ruling the same morning upholding an order for fresh elections by October 20th.
