China could adopt 5G technology by 2020

Chinese telecommunications experts say they believe China will begin using 5G mobile internet technology by as early as 2020.

China's Academy of Telecommunication Research made the prediction in two recent 5G white papers.

China, like many other countries, is in the midst of intense research into 5G, which promises a huge leap in data-transfer speeds, leading to a massive expansion in day-to-day applications.

Renowned science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke once said "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic". Proponents of 5G technology are hoping to make that magic a reality, promising the ability to download 30 HD movies in one second.

Recently issued white papers on 5G technology say that China will likely enter the 5G era around 2020.

Fifth generation mobile networks will provide unprecedented speeds of up to dozens of Giga-bits per second, along with better coverage and efficiency.

5G networks will also allow hundreds of thousands of simultaneous connections in each area.

5G technology is a hot topic this year, as is what has become known as "the Internet of Things"—the ability to use mobile connections to create new automated solutions to everyday issues.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March, several excavators were controlled remotely more than 2,000 kilometers away from the conference, using 5G networks.

Scientists and business insiders predict more than 500 million "things"—including sensors, mobile phones, and PCs—will one day be interconnected through 5G.
