The Italian coastguard says it has rescued 2,000 migrants from the sea since Wednesday.
Eight rescue operations were carried out in the past 24 hours by the Italian coastguard and naval vessels, as well as ships from the German navy, Maltese and Swedish coastguard.
Earlier in the week, Italian ships rescued more than 400 migrants from four boats in the Mediterranean sea, among them four newborns and one young child.
According to the International Organisation for Migration, about 150,000 migrants, many fleeing poverty and war in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, came to Europe by sea this year.
