Investors hoisted a for-sale sign over emerging markets assets on Wednesday, with an index of major developing nations’ currencies dropping by the most in a month after the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates and signalled that more are on the way next year.

EM equities also came under pressure. The MSCI emerging markets index ended the day 1.1 per cent lower at 867.78. Brazil’s Bovespa index dropped 1.8 per cent, while Mexico’s IPC index shed 1.4 per cent.

While the move by Fed officials to raise interest rates was widely expected, the market appeared to have been caught off the hop by the central bank’s interest-rate forecasts. Policymakers are now penciling in three more rate increase in 2017, up from a previous estimate of two.
