　　China will become a high-speed rail leader in the world after several years of rapid development, Ignacio Barron, the director of High Speed of International Union of Railways (UIC) said on Wednesday.

　　国际铁路联盟高速铁路部(UIC)总监伊格纳西奥巴伦上周三称，中国有望在世界高速铁路建设方面处于领先者地位。

　　在上面的报道中，high-speed rail 就是指“高速铁路”，也就是“高铁”。根据UIC的定义，high-speed rail 是指运营时速在200公里以上的passenger rail lines (客运专线)。到2012年，中国将建成“四纵四横” high-speed rail network(高速铁路专线网)，这是缓解我国铁路运力紧张的 most effective and environmentally-friendly solution(最有效，最环保的解决方案)。

　　High-speed rail network 建成后，ticket scalper (票贩子) 有可能就成为了历史名词。除passenger rail lines 外，有些国家的high-speed rail 还提供 freight service(货运服务)，例如 postal freight(邮政运输)。除铁路外，各国还大力发展其它运输系统来解决交通问题，例如美国的全国高速公路网：interstate highway system (州际公路系统)。
