看视频学英语:幸福!尝遍苏州各式小点心The famous dim sum and desserts in Suzhou
Cheng Xiaomei, a hardworking worker and housewife, was forced to leave the house she grew up in because of the reconstruction plan of the government. Soon after that, both she and her husband were laid off and in debt. After years of struggle, she opened a grocery store, paid off the debt and is getting ready to move back to Jifu Alley, a place that was torn down and is now rebuilt.
Even in tough times, Xiaomei managed to save up enough money to buy a new house. Her brothers opposed the idea because the house was too expensive and it would cost her all her savings. She insisted in getting the house so she could provide a better environment for her daughter to study and also to fulfill her long time dream – moving back to Jifu Alley.
Through the old photos Xiaomei and her old neighbors kept and by revisiting the old site with them, we will witness the rapid change in Shanghai and the strong emotional ties the last generation has towards the Shikumen houses and alleys.
