Ting Fang found the first sandal. It was lying by the road and was a very dirty, wet piece of straw.

Ting Fang shouted when he found it, and the children called,

Ting Fang picked up the sandal, put his rope through the hole in the heel,

He had twenty-five sandals, and the little girl who came next had only sixteen.

The whole crowd of boys and girls walked a long way on the Big Horse Road,

picking up every sandal they could find.

Next they turned down North Gate Street, where the stores pushed right to the very edge,

and where there were always many people and rickshas.

Once the little girl, who now was only six sandals behind Ting Fang,

saw four sandals bunched together right by the edge of a deep ditch.
她看见四只草鞋捆在一起，丢在深沟里。
She went scrambling to get them and almost fell into the ditch.
急急忙忙去拿，差点儿掉进去。
When she called out, Ting Fang ran to help her.
当她喊出声时，方廷跑过去帮她，
He pulled her out and laughed at her.
把她拉了出来笑了笑。
"Did you want to take a bath?" he said.
“你想洗澡吗?”
He helped the little girl back to the road again and then reached into the ditch and got the sandals for her.

"You take them," the little girl said.
“你拿着吧，”小女孩说道。
"You really got them, Ting Fang." But he said, "No, you saw them first; so you keep them."

The little girl was now only two behind Ting Fang.
小女孩现在只落后方廷两只草鞋。
