一.across：adv. 横过，穿过，朝向特定的方向，在对面，横写地 prep. 横过，穿过，在对面，在(身体某部位)上，在…各处
【词语用法】
across后常加from，
He lives across (the street) from my house.
他住在我的房子的对面。
与across不同，through是指在三维空间里移动。
We walked across the ice.
I walked through the wood.
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句：When the green light is on, you're allowed to across the road.
纠正：When the green light is on, you're allowed to cross the road.
翻译：当灯变绿的时候，你被允许过马路。
分析：across属于副词和介词，不可作为动词去表示穿过的意思。
【词义辨析】
across, along, over, through,
across: 指“从……的一边到另一边”，强调横过，多与动态动词连用。
along: 指沿着一条直线在水平方向上运动。一般表动态，有时也与静态动词连用。
over: 常和动态动词连用，指“从……上面越过”或“横越”；表静态时，指“在彼处”。
through: 侧重从一端穿到另一端。
across, through, cross,
across: 主要表示从某物的表面“横过”，涉及“面”的概念。
My house is across the harbour，in the vicinity of the Kowloon Park．
我的家在海港的对岸，九龙公园附近。
They live across the Central Plaza.
他们住在中央广场的对面。
Everyone shouts "kill it" when a rat is seen to run across the street．
老鼠过街，人人喊打。
through: 则表示从某个空间“穿过”，涉及“体”的概念。
cross: across和cross在拼写上仅差一字之微，故很易混淆。它们的区别在于词性和使用场合有所不同。across是介词；cross是动词。
He has crossed the border into another territory．
他已越过边界进入别国的领土。
Many steel arch bridges cross the Mississippi in its lower reaches．
在密西西比河的下游许多拱形铁桥横跨河面。
They have crossed over to Japan．

二.follow：v. 跟随，追赶，紧接着，注意，遵循，沿着，明白 n. 跟随
【词语用法】
follow可表示“在……之后”，常作及物动词，后面不需要再加介词after。
The duckling followed its mother everywhere.
小鸭子们紧跟着母鸭到处走。
as follows属于固定的习惯用语，在以词组形式出现的时候，follow不可以单数形式出现，不管句子主语是单数或复数，只可以as follows的形式出现。

规则如下。
follow后的介词如upon有时可省略。
A strange thing followed upon the incident.
这个事件后跟着出了很奇怪的事情。
(as) in the following同as follows一样都属于固定搭配，两者不可混用，如不可随意更改成as following或in the follows；
the following可同时作单数或者复数，随句子的意思而改变。
The following is my full name.
The following are our full names.
following有时以介词形式出现，常见于报纸上。
Following the ceremony a reception was held.
在典礼之后，会举行一场招待会。
要注意，follow后不能接宾语和不定式的结构。
I followed him to go into the house.
这种说法是不可以的。应改成I followed him into the house。
【错句举例与错句分析】
错句：The pages are all mixed up; this should follow after that.
纠正：The pages are all mixed up; this should follow that.
翻译：这些页全部都错乱了，这一页应该是跟在那一页后面的。
分析：follow可表示“在……之后”，常作及物动词，后面不需要再加介词after。
【词义辨析】
pursue, follow, chase, hunt, trace, track, trail,
pursue: 指坚持不懈、毫不动摇地紧跟、追赶某人、某物或某个事业。
follow: 普遍用词，含义最广，多指跟随起引导作用的人或物，跟随的动机可以是善意的，也可能是恶意的。
chase: 指快速追赶或决心追踪，褒义贬义均可用。
hunt: 原义为“追猎、猎取”，现用于指追捕或搜寻逃犯等。
trace: 指根据线索或足迹进行跟踪。用于抽象意义时指找到某事物的根源。
track: 指沿着人或动物留下的印迹或行迹追踪。
trail: 一般指跟踪追击。
