Imagine you're driving your car.

You come up to a stop sign, stop for a moment then continue on your way.

American English has consonant sounds that work like that as well.

They are called conveniently enough "stops".

Stops involve a complete blocking or obstruction of the airstream for just a moment, just like stopping at a stop sign.

There are around six stop sounds in American English and they take place in three different areas in the mouth.
在美式英语中，大约有六个闭塞音，它们在口腔的三个不同区域发声。
Let's explore each of these.

The first two are the /p/ and /b/ sounds.
前两个是/p/ 和 /b/ 音。
They require you to block air with your lips.

Then there are /t/ and /d/ sounds.
