Hello, I'm John Russell.
In a previous video, we explored the two affricates or complex consonant sounds of American English.
They are /ch/ and /zh/.(注:此音标写法为便于编辑,规范写法见视频)
We also explored voicing- the movement of the vocal cords in previous videos as well.
A quick reminder about affricates.
In a previous video, I described affricates as being kind of like addition 1+1=2.
Affricates are made up of a stop sound followed by a freakative sound.
Another way to think of this is stop sound plus fricative sound equals affricate.
So our first affricate /ch/ consists of a /t/ sound followed by /sh/ together they make /ch/.
Similarly, the /zh/ sound starts with the stop sound /d/ and then moves to a fricative sound /ri/.
Together they make /zh/.
But there is another important difference between the two affricate sounds of English: voicing.
One big difference between /ch/ and /zh/ is that /ch/ is voiceless and /zh/ is voiced.
In other words, when you make the /ch/ sound, you should not feel your vocal cords move. /ch/
When you make the /zh/ sound, you should feel your vocal cords move. /zh/
Let's end our video with a quiz.
I'll give you two words.
Can you tell which sound it is?
Is it voiced or voiceless?
