Henri Dunant was a rich businessman from Switzerland.

He went to Paris to work on a business deal with Emperor Napoleon the third.

But Napoleon was away in Italy, fighting a war.

He arrived just in time to see the battle of Solferino.

It was a day that changed his life forever. The year was 1859.

Men lay dying on the battlefield in the fierce sun.

There was no one to care for their wounds or even to bring them a drink of water.

He persuaded local people to help.

But four days after the battle, he discovered 500 more wounded men - men he had not seen before.
