Deciding to have a child can be a difficult choice.

But a recent study in the US has found a difference between men and women and who wants a child more.

The study from Pew Research Center found about half of Americans aged 18 to 34 say they want to become parents someday.

Nearly 6 in 10 men want to become a father, while just under half of women have motherhood in mind.

Professor Marina Adshade says it's not a surprise, noting women will not only face a big toll on their bodies, but on their employment as well, sometimes known as the "mummy penalty".

"They see much slower progression in their careers, they see slower wage growth in their careers.

Economics professor Marie Connolly studied this idea of "child penalty" in Canada, and found women still had not recovered their pre-birth earnings 10 years later.

Her 2023 study found little or no change for men before or after their child's birth.
