Today's Mini English Lesson is about when to use the word during.

I'm gonna give you three sentences and you have to figure out which one is correct.
我将给你三个句子，请找出哪一个是正确的。
Sentence number one: I went to Italy during two weeks.
句子1：我在意大利待了两周。
Number two: I always travel during the summer.
第二：我总是在夏天旅行。
Number three: I fell asleep during I was waiting for my train.
第三：我在等火车的时候睡着了。
And the correct sentence was...
正确的句子是……
Number two. I always travel during the summer.
第二个。我总是在夏天旅行。
We use during to say when something happened,
我们用during来表示某事发生的时间，
but we use it with a noun or a noun phrase.
但要将其与名词或名词短语一起使用。
So, the summer is a noun.
夏天是一个名词。
This will often refer to an event.
这个名词通常指一个事件。
For example, please pay attention during class.
例如，请在上课时注意听讲。
You might want to take notes during the presentation.
你可以在听展示的时候做笔记。
I was so tired, I fell asleep during lunch.
我太累了，在午饭时睡着了。
There we have three events: class, the presentation and lunch.
这里我们有三个活动：上课、听展示和吃午餐。
And of course, the most important one is lunch.
当然，最重要的是午餐。
You might also use during with a time period.
你也可以在during后面跟一个时期。
For example, I travelled a lot during my childhood.
例如，我在童年时期经常旅行。
During the pandemic, lots of people made friends with their neighbours.
在疫情期间，很多人与邻居成为了朋友。
What was that strange noise I heard during the night?
我在夜里听到的那个奇怪声音是什么？
In these cases, we could replace during with in.
在这些情况下，我们可以用in替换during。
I travelled a lot in my childhood.
我在童年时期经常旅行。

So we know that we use during with a noun or a noun phrase,
所以我们知道，在使用during时要加上一个名词或名词短语，
but why were the other two sentences incorrect?
但是为什么其他两个句子是不正确的呢？
Number one: I went to Italy during two weeks.
第一：我在意大利待了两周。
Here, we can't use during because we have a number.
在这里我们不能使用during，因为有一个数字。
When we have a number, we should use for.
当有数字时，我们应该使用for。
It could be a short period of time or a long period of time.
可能是一段较短的时间，也可能是一段较长的时间。
I went to Italy for two weeks.
我在意大利待了两周。
I've studied English for five years.
我学英语学了五年。
Yesterday, I went swimming for five minutes.
昨天我去游泳了五分钟。
It doesn't matter how long the time is, when there's a number we can use for.
时间长短并不重要，重要的是有数字的时候要用for。
Sentence number three: I fell asleep during I was waiting for the train.
第三句：我在等火车的时候睡着了。
Here we can't use during because we have a subject and a verb.
在这里我们不能使用during，因为有一个主语和一个动词。
So we should use while.
所以我们应该使用while。
I fell asleep while I was waiting for the train.
我在等火车的时候睡着了。
We could also say, I like to listen to podcasts while I cook.
我们也可以说，我喜欢在做饭的时候听播客。
Or never use your phone while you're driving.
或者，永远不要在开车时使用手机。
