I'm Rami Malek, and today I'm going to be reading to you one of my favorite books.

This is The Empty Pot, written and illustrated by Demi.
这本书叫《空花盆》，作者和插画师是黛米。
A long time ago in China there was a boy named Ping, who loved flowers.
很久以前，在中国，有一个叫平的男孩，他很喜欢花。
Anything he planted burst into bloom.
他种下的任何东西都鲜花怒放。
Up came flowers, bushes, and even big fruit trees, as if by magic!
花草、灌木，甚至是大果树，都像变魔术一样破土而出！
Everyone in the kingdom loved flowers too.
王国里的每个人也都喜欢花。
They planted them everywhere, and the air smelled like perfume.
人们在各个地方种满了花，空气里弥漫着馥郁的花香。
The Emperor loved birds and animals, but flowers most of all, and he tended his own garden every day.
皇帝很喜欢鸟兽，但最喜欢的还是花，而且他每天都亲自打理自己的花园。
But the Emperor was very old.
但是皇帝很年迈了。
He needed to choose a successor to the throne.
他需要选择一位皇位继承人。
Who would his successor be?
继承人会是谁呢？
And how would the Emperor choose?
皇帝会如何选择呢？
Because the Emperor loved flowers so much, he decided to let the flowers choose.
因为皇帝非常喜欢花，所以他决定让花来选择。
The next day a proclamation was issued: All the children in the land were to come to the palace.
第二天发布了一项公告：国内所有幼童都要入宫。
There they would be given special flower seeds by the Emperor.
在宫里，他们会得到皇帝赐予的特殊花种。
"Whoever can show me their best in a year's time," he said, "will succeed me to the throne."
“谁能在一年内把花种得最好，”他说，“谁就能继承我的皇位。”
This news created great excitement throughout the land!
这一消息在全国引起了极大的轰动！
Children from all over the country swarmed to the palace to get their flower seeds.
来自全国各地的孩子们蜂拥至宫殿，领取花种。
All the parents wanted their children to be chosen Emperor, and all the children hoped they would be chosen too!
所有父母都希望自己的孩子被选为皇帝，所有的孩子也都希望自己被选中！
When Ping received his seed from the Emperor, he was the happiest child of all.
当平从皇帝那里收到种子时，他是所有孩子中最快乐的。
He was sure he could grow the most beautiful flower.
他确信他能种出最美丽的花。
Ping filled a flowerpot with rich soil.
平在一个花盆里装满了肥沃的土。
He planted the seed in it very carefully.
他非常小心地把种子种在里面。
He watered it every day.
他每天都给种子浇水。
He couldn't wait to see it sprout, grow, and blossom into a beautiful flower!
他迫不及待地想看到它发芽、生长，并绽放成一朵美丽的花！
Day after day passed, but nothing grew in his pot.
一天又一天过去了，但是他的花盆里什么也没长出来。
Ping was very worried.
平非常担心。
He put new soil into a bigger pot.
他把新土放进一个更大的花盆里。
Then he transferred the seed into the rich black soil.
然后他把种子转移到肥沃的黑土中。
Another two months he waited.
他又等了两个月。
Still nothing happened.
仍然什么都没有发生。
By and by the whole year passed.
渐渐地，一整年过去了。
