Automakers are cramming "infotainment technology" into new cars and drivers are now taking their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel for dangerously long periods of time, so says University of Utah professor David Strayer.
He's been examining the impact of infotainment systems on safety since 2013. Strayer says the "explosion of technology" has made things worse. Infotainment options now allow drivers to use social media, email and text while behind the wheel. And it's becoming more complicated to use. Some vehicles now have as many as 50 multi-functional buttons on the steering wheel and dashboard.
